Member of the Month: Jenn

January Spotlight

Every member’s journey looks different.
Jenn’s story is honest, funny, and a perfect reminder that “fitness” isn’t one-size-fits-all.

Below is Jenn’s interview, shared in her own words, with light structure so you can really feel her experience.

What is your super power?

“Ummmmm Super Strength? IDK, I’m just your normal neighborhood Jenn.”

What exercise or nutrition plans did you try before joining Black Bear Fitness Co.?

“Many of them. Weight Watchers, Atkins, Keto, all the fat loss burning supplements, unhealthy fasting, etc.”

How would you describe your health and fitness level before joining BBFC?

(Scale of 1–10, with 10 being excellent)

“Oh, definitely a 1.5. I could barely chase after my then toddler without losing my breath.”

What made you choose Black Bear Fitness Co. over other options?

“Convenience. I responded to a Facebook ad back in 2015 as a way to cope with my divorce and get my life together.”

“BBFC (then CF BB) was close to home and the classes were small. I was able to ease into the classes without feeling like there was a big spotlight on me for being unfit, and I also did not feel like I was just another body in the gym.”

“The coaches seemed to actually have an interest in my goals right from the start and still to this day.”

What makes Black Bear Fitness Co. unique?

“100% the gym friendships you build almost immediately from the day you step foot in the building.”

“Everyone is kind and obnoxiously welcoming.”

“BBFC allows you to pursue your own goals while also being able to support everyone else’s too.”

“In one setting you can have members with a goal of moving their body for 20 minutes to lifting heavy to running marathons and other large competitions.”

“EVERYONE is welcome. Not just the super fit jocks.”

What is the biggest improvement you’ve noticed since joining BBFC?

“Confidence in my body’s ability to move and being able to recognize when it shouldn’t do something.”

“I used to just ‘push through’ any obstacle (fatigue, pain, etc) and now I push less. :)”

What keeps you coming back?

“My gym buddies and being able to lift heavy things without shame or judgement.”

“OH! And the lack of mirrors!”

“Mirrors are gross and I am VERY thankful they do not have a huge wall full of them like conventional gyms do.”

“I probably would cancel my membership if mirrors ever made it to the gym floor. Ew.”

What would you say to someone who thinks they’re not “fit enough” to start at BBFC?

“That they’re smokin crack and being ‘fit’ isn’t a one size fits all term.”

“Right now, my definition of ‘fit’ is being able to lift heavy objects.”

“I find my identity in lifting.”

“Being able to squat, deadlift, bench, lunge, throw sandbags, etc is my current definition of fit.”

“If I add in being amazing at cardio (I am NOT) then I would call that ‘fit fit’.”

“Being fit is relative to a specific person’s needs and is 100% dependent on their short-term goals.”

“It is the short-term goals that get you from one long-term goal to another.”
