Why We Use the Swiss Bar Bench Press at Black Bear Fitness Co.

A lot of adults want to get stronger without paying for it with shoulder pain. That’s why the Swiss bar bench press has become one of our go-to pressing movements. It gives you all the benefits of benching while putting your shoulders in a safer, more natural position.

The biggest shift is the grip.
Instead of the wide, flared position you see in a traditional barbell bench, the Swiss bar puts your hands in a neutral grip. Wrists stay stacked. Elbows stay tucked. Shoulders stay happier. For anyone who has dealt with pain, stiffness, or time away from training, this small detail makes a big difference.

Why this movement works

The neutral grip reduces stress on the shoulder joint.
It lets you press heavy without feeling pinched.
It also helps people stay consistent, which is the real driver of strength long term.

You still build chest, shoulders, and triceps. You just do it in a way that your body can repeat week after week.

How we coach it

Set your feet and keep your upper back tight on the bench.
Grip the handles so your wrists stay lined up over your elbows.
Lower the bar under control with your elbows slightly tucked.
Press up with intention and finish strong without slamming into lockout.

This is not a movement you rush. It’s controlled strength through a full range of motion.

Why we program it at Black Bear

We don’t choose exercises to impress anyone.
We choose movements that help you get stronger without beating you up. The Swiss bar bench press does exactly that. It keeps your shoulders healthy while giving you a clear path to progress.

If traditional benching has ever bothered you, this variation might be the missing piece.

Train smart. Stay healthy. Get strong.
