Meet Karen LeBreton, our inspiring Member of the Month at Black Bear Fitness. At 58, Karen has committed to her fitness not just for the physical gains but to increase her energy, confidence, and sense of self.

Like many, Karen struggled with various health and fitness approaches before finding her true home here at CFBB.

Karen, what is your Super Power?
I believe my superpower is my smile. I believe my smile makes me approachable and welcoming.

What exercise/nutrition plans did you try before joining Black Bear Fitness?
I have tried every plan out there—Weight Watchers, Noom, Fasting, Keto, and many others, including supplements and pills.

How would you describe your health and fitness level on a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being poor and 10 being excellent) and why, before joining Black Bear Fitness?
Before joining Black Bear Fitness, I was struggling to move and maintain any energy throughout the day. I did a lot of walking, which gave me some activity, but I truly knew I needed to make a change. I would give myself a 2 for my fitness level. My eating habits were poor, and I didn’t think about what I was putting in for fuel (food). I often resorted to drive-thru meals, telling myself I had earned that greasy burger and fries.

What made you choose Black Bear Fitness over other options?
To be honest, I feel like CrossFit chose me. I was scrolling through Facebook and saw a lady being interviewed. Her story inspired me, and I decided to give it a try.

What do you feel makes Black Bear Fitness unique as opposed to other gym facilities?
Black Bear Fitness is “MY GYM.” The atmosphere of family and the encouragement from the members make it such a wonderful place to sweat. The attention from the coaches and their sincere care and concern for everyone is amazing. The coaches truly listen and adapt to our needs. I love the instruction in both class and semi-private sessions. In other gyms, I was never sure of what or how many exercises to do, or whether I was using the machines correctly. But at CFBB, the coaches are so well-educated and engaging!

What is the biggest improvement you have noticed in yourself since joining CFBB?
The biggest improvement is putting myself first. I used to always put others’ needs before my own. The coaches here help me work through tough days, and I always feel better after being at the gym.

What do you think it is about CFBB that keeps you coming back?
It’s my desire to become healthier and lose weight. Every time I walk into the gym, I feel accomplished. The demands on my time are many, but CFBB has created an environment of acceptance and encouragement. I need that support to stay on track and be a better me.

What would you say to someone who thinks they are not “fit” enough to start their journey with CFBB?
I would tell them to come see what they can do. It’s not always about looking good—it’s about feeling good. CFBB helps you see your true value, and that you are worth the time, money, and energy.
