The Challenge of Getting Fit When You’re Single (and Have No One Holding You Accountable)

Staying fit when you’re on your own can feel like an uphill battle, especially when you’re single or in a family where health and fitness isn’t a shared value. I’ve been there, and I know it’s tough.

The Struggle When Traveling Alone

When I travel alone, I always pack a few books, some healthy snacks, and plan to focus on recovery and self-care. But every time, I’m amazed at how quickly things spiral when I don’t have my usual support system.

I’ve learned that it’s easy to slip into old habits when you’re away from the structure of daily life. I went rogue my first night on a recent trip, staying up late, eating junk food, and mindlessly scrolling on my phone. I didn’t open my books or meditate, and I totally ignored my plans to focus on recovery. The next day, while I was grocery shopping to prep for a hike, I messed up again, eating half of what I bought before I even got home, then going out to dinner for more unhealthy choices. Then back to the phone and TV.

I don’t feel terrible about it because I know it’s temporary, and I’m out of my routine. But it’s a stark reminder of how much I rely on structure and accountability to stay on track.

How Hard It Is for Those Who Are Single or Have No Support

For anyone who’s single or trying to do it alone, I get it. It’s incredibly hard to stay disciplined when you’re the only one holding yourself accountable. Resisting the urge to buy junk food or skip cooking because it’s easier to just order out is tough. And when no one’s watching, it can feel lonely, especially when cooking for one feels like a chore.

It’s even harder when the people around you don’t share the same commitment to health. Cooking different meals, having food in the house that’s hard to resist, it’s a constant challenge.

The Importance of Building a Support System

This is why building a support system is not just helpful, but essential. Take Chris and Rich, for example, both dads who’ve signed up for Papa Bear to keep each other accountable. They know how important health is, and they’ve both tried traditional gyms and online diets that just didn’t work for them. It’s not that they lack the knowledge; in fact, their obsessive behavior might make them experts in what they should be doing. But without a clear structure and accountability, starting is overwhelming.

Commitment to Health: A Long-Term Journey

Health and fitness are long-term commitments. You won’t see results overnight. It takes patience and consistency, and above all, you need to recognize that it’s something you have to cultivate forever. The temptations are always there, whether it’s that sweet treat or the pull of sitting on the couch. But building a support system, whether it’s a coach, a program, or a workout buddy, is the only way to keep you on track for the long haul.
