Welcome to Coach Matt!

Welcome to Coach Matt on the Cfbb Team!! Matt is a certified personal trainer who has been coaching and leading people in various ways in his adult life. He is a professional who loves going out of his comfort zone physically and mentally and doesn’t expect less from members he will help during his career at Black Bear Fitness. We are very excited to have him helping our people and the gym grow to their full potential!!

Background:
Except for a few years, I grew up in Hampden Maine. My athletic journey started in the 4th grade when I fell in love with football. I played until I graduated. In that time, through incredibly lucky circumstances I got to be around some really talented coaches that set a good example of how to do things the right way. Seeing how much effect a good coach could have started my interest in coaching. After that I messed around in college until I turned 21, when I found a part time job in a brewery. I fell in love with the art and science of brewing and ended up spending the next 15 years In the brewing industry. I started as a part time keg washer, and ended managing brewery operations… and did pretty much every job in between. In that same time I got involved in Roller Derby, playing for a men’s league, coaching a local women’s league, and eventually was voted to coach the women’s Maine all star team, which is where my love for coaching/training really grew.

Hobbies:
With most of my free time I really like to workout and run… a lot! I also like to read and try to spend as much time with my family as possible.

Family:
I live in Brewer with my significant other, Kelly, who is a nurse and is a certified personal trainer as well. We have an 11 year old son Anthony who plays just about every sport, and sometimes I can even trick him into going for a run with me. We also have two dogs, Oliver and Cash, who are pretty great running partners.

Future Aspirations:
When it comes to my career I’m not really the type to make 5 year plans or even set big, long term goals. I think if I surround myself with intelligent people who are good at the things I want to be good at, and I push myself to become a better coach/person everyday then opportunities will present themselves, and I should be in a good position to take advantage of them as they come. Outside of my career, I would like to podium a 100 mile race, and make sure I never lose an athletic competition to my son.

Why do I want to be a part of the CFBB Team?
I love helping people work towards, and achieve their goals. I think a lot of positive changes can start in a gym. When you achieve something that you might not have thought you could do, like hit a weight loss goal, or move heavier weights than before, it starts to change the way you think about what you are capable of, and not just in the gym. From my experience so far CFBB is really all about helping the members achieve their goals and create that positive environment of growth that can have a great impact on people, even outside of the gym.
